Smart Switches vs Conventional: decide before the wiring

Almost every new villa and apartment in Hyderabad now has "smart switches" in the brief. Very few briefs say what that means — and the answer decides how the electrician runs the wires, which is a decision you cannot undo after plastering. This is the guide we walk our own clients through: what a smart switch really does, retrofit versus wired, what it costs per room, and what to fix before the conduits go in.

What a smart switch actually does — and what it doesn't

A smart switch replaces the switch plate on the wall so each light, fan and socket can be controlled from the wall, a phone, voice, or a schedule. That much is what the ads sell. The part that changes how a home feels is different: a good smart switch dims, and it lets several loads be set together as a scene — "Evening" brings the cove up to 40 per cent, drops the downlights, and leaves the profile line as a trace. One touch, every night.

What a smart switch does not do is fix a bad lighting plan. If a room has one circuit of eight downlights, a smart switch gives you those eight downlights on and off from your phone. The value comes from having the lighting split into layers and circuits in the first place — which is why we design the lighting and the control as one conversation, not two vendors.

Retrofit or wired — the decision that depends on where your walls are

RETROFIT

Wireless smart switches

A module or touch-panel replaces each existing switchboard and talks over Wi-Fi, Zigbee or a proprietary radio. Uses your current wiring; needs a neutral at the box. Days to install, no civil work. The right answer for a finished home.

WIRED

Centralised / KNX systems

Lighting loads go back to a panel of dimmers and relays; wall keypads carry only a control cable. No radio, no batteries, no Wi-Fi dependence, better dimming, 20-year lifespan. Must be planned before plastering.

HYBRID

Wired core, wireless edges

Central dimming for the main lighting layers, with wireless devices for curtains, locks and the odd retrofit. What most large Hyderabad villas end up with when the budget is real but not unlimited.

What to decide before the electrician starts

1. Neutral at every switch box

Older Hyderabad wiring often carries only live and load to the switch. Retrofit smart switches need a neutral there. Tell the electrician now; it is a ten-minute instruction at wiring stage and a wall-opening job later.

2. Lighting in layers, on separate circuits

Cove, downlights, profile, accents and decorative fixtures each on their own circuit. This is the single decision that makes scenes possible. A room wired as one circuit can never be dimmed in layers, whatever switch you buy.

3. Dimmable drivers, bought to match

Every LED fixture that will dim needs a dimmable driver that matches the dimming protocol — phase-cut, 0-10V or DALI. Mismatched drivers are the cause of nearly every flickering "smart" home we are called to fix.

4. Where the panel lives

Wired systems need a lighting panel with space and ventilation — usually in a utility or a store room, not behind a bed. Plan the location and the conduit runs to it on the electrical drawing.

5. Keypad positions and what each button means

A smart home with a keypad that says nothing is a home nobody uses. Decide the button map per room — Bright, Evening, Off, Curtains — and where the keypads sit. Fewer buttons, clearly labelled, at the door you actually enter through.

Smart lighting is the start, not the system

Switches and lighting are where most Hyderabad homes begin, because they are the part you touch every day. The same control layer then extends to motorised curtains and blinds, air-conditioning, video door phones and smart locks, CCTV, and voice through Alexa, Google or Siri — and to energy monitoring that shows which loads are actually costing you. All of it should sit on one app, not five. That whole-home picture is what we design and install as home automation in Hyderabad; the cost logic across it is in what home automation costs in Hyderabad, and the wired-versus-wireless argument in detail in KNX vs wireless automation.

Why a lighting studio, not a switch dealer

Most smart-switch installers in Hyderabad sell one brand's panels and leave. We design the lighting, split the circuits, specify matched dimmable drivers, choose the control system that fits the home — retrofit, KNX or Control4 — and our own teams install, programme and return to tune the scenes once you have lived in the house. The keypads and the lighting are on our wall in Jubilee Hills; a demo takes half an hour. We are ten minutes away when something needs a look — whether the home is in Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Kokapet, Gachibowli or the Financial District.

Questions Hyderabad homeowners ask about smart switches

What does a smart switch actually do?

It replaces the conventional switch plate and lets each light, fan or socket be controlled from the wall, a phone, voice or a schedule — and, crucially, lets several be set together as a scene. A good smart switch also dims, so the same light can be bright for work and soft in the evening.

Do smart switches need special wiring?

Retrofit smart switches use existing wiring and only need a neutral at the switch box, which most Hyderabad homes built after 2010 have. Wired systems such as KNX or a centralised panel need a control cable to each switch and the lighting loads brought back to a panel — planned before plastering.

How much do smart switches cost in Hyderabad?

Retrofit modules from reliable brands run roughly ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 per switchboard depending on loads and dimming; a typical 3BHK is ₹1.2 to ₹2.5 lakh installed. Wired systems with designer keypads and central dimming start around ₹5 to ₹6 lakh for an apartment and ₹10 lakh plus for a villa. Full breakdown in what home automation costs.

Will smart switches work if the internet goes down?

The wall switch itself should always work without internet or Wi-Fi — if a system cannot do that, do not buy it. Phone and voice control need the local network; only access from outside the home needs the internet.

Retrofit smart switches or a wired system — which should I choose?

If the walls are plastered, retrofit. If you are at the wiring stage of a new villa or a full renovation, wired is more reliable, dims better, has no batteries or Wi-Fi dependence, and lasts the life of the house. We design both and will tell you which fits the home and the budget.

Can smart switches control profile lights and cove lighting?

Yes, provided the LED strips are on dimmable drivers matched to the control system. Cove and profile lights are exactly the layers that benefit most from dimming — at ten per cent they become the night-time trace of the room.
